A man who led police on a short chase was in fair condiition Monday after smashing into a power pole.

North Salt Lake police began chasing a possible stolen vehicle near 2300 N. Redwood Road about 10:40 a.m. Sunday. At Beck Street and Victory Road, the man ran a red light, said Salt Lake police detective Dennis McGowan.

Salt Lake police were called to assist once the vehicle reached the area of the state Capitol. An officer spotted the car near 300 West and 900 North, McGowan said.

Near 1700 N. Beck St., the man's vehicle swerved without apparent reason into a power pole, shearing the pole off its base, he said.

The man was taken into custody by North Salt Lake police and taken to a local hospital for inuries that were not life threatening.
