While the celebration of Advent is not a sacrament of the church, it is yet another way to emphasize the need for personal "preparation for the day of Christ's coming," he said, adding that Old Testament prophets spoke not only of his birth as a baby, but dually of his return.
"The liturgy screams of this stuff if people are paying attention and everyone takes great care to prepare for it. All of it speaks of very strongly of images of the second coming." Though many priests "don't just come right out and say it," Advent celebrations use poetic images from scripture or St. Ambrose and St. Augustine that reference light and darkness.
"If people are listening for it, they will get the message."
The Catholic Diocesan Office of Liturgy will offer a series that focuses on the theology, spirituality and symbolism of the advent season. Presentations will be held from 7-8 p.m. on the following dates and locations: Thursday, Dec. 4, Saint Anne Parish, 450 E. 2100 South; Thursday, Dec. 11, Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel at Juan Diego Catholic High School, 300 E. 11800 South, Draper; and Wednesday, Dec. 17, Saint Ann Parish, 450 E. 2100 South.
