4A high school football championship: Timpview holds off Cottonwood for three-peat
The T-Birds defeated Cottonwood 34-28 in a thrilling 4A state championship game at Rice-Eccles Stadium this afternoon. It was Timpview's third straight 4A state title, and state record 36th consecutive win.
Timpview survived a mighty challenge from Cottonwood. The T-Birds fell behind 28-21 early in the third quarter after allowing the Colts to score on four straight possessions. But Timpview's defense tightened up, and quarterback Casey Rumsey scored on an 18-yard run to tie the game.
Levi Teo scored on a 3-yard run to give Timpview its 34-28 winning margin with 10:56 left in the game.
Lineman Xavier Su'a-Filo had a huge game for the T-Birds. He played on both sides of the ball, and blocked a punt to set up Rumsey's 18-yard score. He had five tackles, two of which went for losses.
Rumsey completed 17-of-27 passes for 271 yards and rushed for 80 yards. Teo had 110 receiving yards and 85 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Chris Badger had 10 tackles, and Ofa Latu had seven tackles for the T-Birds.
Isi Sofele had 194 rushing yards for the Colts, who were playing in just their second state football championship game in school history. Asi Hosea had 17 tackles for Cottonwood.
