Falcons open hoops season with victory
Western State's Justin Avalos had a game-high 20 points and pulled down five rebounds in a match in which the lead changed 11 times. Air Force (1-0) held a slim lead, 31-29, at the half.
Cameron Burney scored 18 points had seven rebounds for the Mountaineers (0-1). Jeremy Brooks added 13 points and pulled down six rebounds.
The Falcons shot 60.9 percent in the second half to pull away from Western State.
In other action involving Mountain West teams:
COLORADO STATE 86, MONTANA 55: At Fort Collins, Colo., Andy Ogide had a double-double in his debut, with 20 points and 14 rebounds, leading Colorado State to an 85-55 victory over Montana on Friday night.
The sophomore transfer from Mississippi was 6-for-8 shooting and eight of rebounds came off the offensive glass. Marcus Walker added 17 points for Colorado State (1-0) in the season opener for both teams.
The Rams shot 50 percent to build a 39-20 lead at the break. The Grizzlies, which shot 28 percent for the period, made only 3-of 12 shots to start the game and fell behind 25-10 on Harvey Perry's layup with 7:05 left.
TCU 67, WESTERN MICHIGAN 63: At Charleston, S.C., Texas Christian outscored Western Michigan 17-9 in the final 4:03 to beat the Broncos 67-63 in the first round of the Charleston Classic Friday at Carolina First Arena.
Edvinas Ruzgas led TCU (1-0) with 16 points.
