PROVO — A woman hit by a truck in a Provo crosswalk has died as a result of her injuries.

Maria Preste, 73, was attempting to cross the road at the intersection of University Avenue and Paul Ream Avenue on Oct. 4 just before 2 p.m. when a truck turned left and hit her at low speed.

The 21-year-old driver told police he had been looking left at traffic to ensure it was clear to go but failed to double check to his right as he pulled out into the crosswalk. As soon as he noticed the woman, he slammed on his brakes, hitting her at low speed and pushing her down.

She hit her head and was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, where she passed away Oct. 6 as a result of complications from her injuries, said Provo Police Lt. John Geyerman.

The case was sent to the Provo city attorney to review for any citations or charges.
