Hogle Zoo, 2600 E. Sunnyside Ave., will celebrate National Wolf Awareness Week on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Visitors will be be able to learn about efforts to promote wolf conservation and the critical importance wolves play in maintaining a healthy and balanced ecosystem. Zoo guests will also learn about wolves from the staff that care for them, including a special enrichment presentation at 1:30 p.m.

There will be games and prizes throughout the day as well.

What Makes Wolves So Cool?

• Even though it's almost Halloween-time, wolves do not howl at the moon, and their howling is not an expression of sadness.

• The wolf has one of the widest ranges of size, shape and color of any mammal in North America.

• The main threat to wolf populations is loss of habitat, and when wolves prey, it is the act of obtaining food for survival.

• In chases, the wolf can achieve estimated speeds of between 28 and 40 mph for up to 20 minutes.
