Utah State football: San Jose State gets near shut-out over Aggies
David Richmond caught eight passes, including one for a touchdown, for 89 yards as the Spartans (4-2, 2-0 WAC) won for the 15th time in 17 home games. Terrance Williams and Brian Elledge also caught TD passes.
Duke Ihenacho had two interceptions, returning one 43 yards for a score. Jared Strubeck added a field goal.
Diondre Borel threw for 66 yards and rushed for 43 as the Aggies (1-5, 1-1 WAC) had a three-game conference winning streak snapped. With 1:50 remaining, Utah State scored to avoid being shutout for the first time this year.
If the Aggies hadn't scored, San Jose State would have recorded its first shutout since blanking Grambling 29-0 on Aug. 23, 2003. The Spartans defense, ranked 22nd in the nation, also held an opponent under 200 yards for the second time this season.
Utah State, which had 190 total yards, failed on its first 11 third-down conversions and was 3-of-16 overall. The Aggies punted the ball 10 times, the most in a game since 2004. Both teams combined to punt 17 times.
Reed, who played one series in the fourth quarter before being replaced, completed 28 of 40 passes. He also rushed for 22 yards.
Ronald Scott caught a one-yard pass from Sean Setzer for the Aggies' touchdown. It's the second passing touchdown allowed by the Spartans and the first since their season opener against UC Davis.
