Formerly conjoined twins Maliyah and Kendra Herrin are recuperating from surgery Thursday to correct curvature of their spines.

"They're doing well," said Primary Children Medical Center spokeswoman Bonnie Midget. The 6-year-old girls are listed in fair condition but were released from intensive care after a day there. If they continue to progress without problems, they'll be released from the hospital in two or three days, she said.

The girls were born joined at the abdomen and torso and were separated in a marathon surgery in August 2006.

Since then, the girls, daughters of Jake and Erin Herrin of North Salt Lake, had a number of procedures, including a kidney transplant for Maliyah using a kidney donated by her mother.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. John Smith inserted rods to straighten the girls' curved backs during the procedures Thursday.
