Wonders of the body on display

"Body Worlds" also includes displays that show what happens when the body is abused. There's a smoker's lung that looks like it's been dropped in a bag of soot next to a clear, clean nonsmoker's lung. There's a cutout of an obese, 300-pound body oozing with fat that makes every organ work longer and harder. There's a clear example of the plaque that forms from the bad cholesterol that results from a poor diet.

And there are fetuses displayed, starting at two weeks, that clearly show growing, discernible bodies.

The messages are clear, or at least they were to me: Exercise. Don't smoke. Don't overeat. Eat healthy. Don't abort. Don't mess with staggering genius.

"Body Worlds" is scheduled to run through January at The Leonardo. Already, thousands of Utahns, especially school kids on field trips, have passed through the exhibit. On the way out I glanced at comments in the guest book located just outside the exit. Many were obviously written by teenagers.

A sampling:

"Totally wicked," "Sweet," "Rocked," "It ruled," "It's sick," "Amazing," "Awesome," "Very awesome," "Gnarly," "Bombastic," "Radicool," "Quite the eyeful," "Life-changing," "I feel honored to have witnessed great artwork."

My sentiments exactly.
